3 April 2025 - Dr Frédérik Saltré How do traits shape survival in a shifting world?

Join an ecological modeller on a journey to understand how species — native and invasive, herbivores and carnivores — carve out niches in dynamic environments. By analysing a vast array of environmental variables, this research investigates how the functional traits of different animals determine their ability to survive, adapt, or even thrive outside their 'ideal' habitats. What factors tip the balance between survival and extinction? And can invasive species ever play a role in supporting ecosystem function where native species are in decline? This work invites us to think about how ecological modelling can inform conservation and land management in a changing climate.

Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first peoples, knowledge‐holders, and knowledge-creators of this country. We acknowledge that First Nations people never ceded their lands or seas. We value the knowledge and traditions that reflect the wisdom of ancestors going back 65,000 years and more and recognise the significance of this in the ways that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are custodians of Country. We will continue to learn ways to care for and be responsible for Country, and we will seek to build a future that is based on truth‐telling, mutual understanding, hope, empowerment, and self‐determination.
