1 May - Dr Kelsea Lowe

Ever wondered how archaeologists “see” beneath the ground without digging?

Join us for an exciting CIEHF Seminar that will introduce you to one of the most fascinating tools in archaeology today — Ground-penetrating Radar (GPR). Featuring: Dr Kelsey Lowe Archaeological Geophysicist | Lecturer | Cultural Heritage Consultant Talk title: Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) 101 – A beginner’s guide to how GPR is used in Australian archaeology This isn’t just a talk for scientists — it’s for anyone curious about how we uncover Australia’s deep human history. Dr Lowe will demystify GPR and share how this non-invasive method is helping us understand ancient landscapes and locate signs of early human life in places where traditional excavation may not be possible. With over 20 years of experience in archaeological geophysics, remote sensing and GIS, Dr Kelsey Lowe has worked across Australia — from Queensland to Tasmania — and internationally in the Caribbean, Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Americas. Dr Lowe’s work is setting new benchmarks in archaeological geophysics. Her research has helped confirm some of the earliest human occupations in Australia, using technology to answer questions that digging alone couldn’t solve. This is a fantastic opportunity to hear how cutting-edge science meets cultural heritage and community collaboration. You’ll learn not just the "how", but the "why" — why this research matters, and how it empowers local Custodians and enriches our shared understanding of Country.

Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first peoples, knowledge‐holders, and knowledge-creators of this country. We acknowledge that First Nations people never ceded their lands or seas. We value the knowledge and traditions that reflect the wisdom of ancestors going back 65,000 years and more and recognise the significance of this in the ways that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are custodians of Country. We will continue to learn ways to care for and be responsible for Country, and we will seek to build a future that is based on truth‐telling, mutual understanding, hope, empowerment, and self‐determination.
